Welcome back to Table Talks ☕️ — an interview column where I pull up a seat across from the tastemakers and visionaries blazing trails and inspiring us in the process with their story, passion, and purpose.
Today, we’re chatting with Barbara Lia — an image consultant who helps women rediscover themselves through the power of personal style.
There’s just something about a good makeover movie that’s always captivated me.
Whether it’s Pretty Woman, The Devil Wears Prada, or Working Girl, what I’ve loved most is that unmistakable magic of transformation – when a woman finally recognizes her full potential and owns it.
Image consultant Barbara Lia has built an entire career around helping her clients do the same.
Only her makeovers don’t happen in the span of two hours — they unfold gradually, from the inside out, where every outward change reflects something far deeper taking shape.
First Impressions
Who do you want to be? How do you want to be perceived? What do you want your style to communicate about you?
These are some of the pointed questions Barbara asks any new client.
As an image consultant, her work goes beyond just wardrobe. Barbara helps people find a visual identity that creates coherence between who they are and how the world sees them.
To her, style is language — a way to deliberately communicate how we’re seen, and ultimately, remembered.
“People are going to judge us. And the first thing they look at is how you dress. They will see if they can trust you, if you’re composed, if you’re well-groomed.
But what most people don’t know is that you can choose what they judge — and how they perceive you.”
For Barbara, fashion isn’t frivolous; it’s a tool for personal power — one that tells a story.
The question is, are you writing yours on purpose?
Lost & Found
Barbara knew it was time to author her own story following one of her darkest hours.
In 2016, after earning a degree in engineering, she left her native home in Brazil to study Management in Ireland.
By all accounts, she was on the “right” path, pursuing the “right” career, yet deep down she knew it wasn’t right for her.
When COVID hit in early 2020, everything unraveled.
Alone in Ireland, with no family and pursuing a degree she knew wasn’t a fit, she suddenly felt lost.
With nowhere to turn, Barbara began therapy — and for the first time, asked herself the questions she’d never really considered before: What do I really want? Who do I want to be? What do I love that’s just for me and doesn’t involve pleasing others?
The answers kept circling back to the same place: fashion.
It had always been there — playing dress-up in her mother’s closet as a kid, putting on runway shows for her family, altering clothes using her grandmother’s sewing machine.
Fashion was the thread that ran through her entire life — the thing she returned to again and again.
But she had no idea how to make a living from it. Styling felt like something reserved for celebrities, magazines, movie sets — not regular folks.
Then in 2021, she stumbled across a friend-of-a-friend’s Instagram who was posting about the glow-ups she’d helped her clients achieve.
Barbara was fascinated.
People actually got paid to do this? Immediately, she reached out to the woman eager to learn more about what she did.
The answer: Image Consulting. She helped people understand their colors, body shapes, and how to dress in a way that actually worked for them.
Barbara knew instantly.
That is what she wanted to do. That was her calling.
Within a week, she’d enrolled in several courses — and never looked back.

The Art of Dressing Well
Today, with a thriving image consulting business of her own, Barbara helps women (and men) design the life they want — on purpose — through style.
Many come to her in transition: a promotion on the horizon, a desire to finally put themselves first, or that restless ache of feeling stuck for far too long.
Whatever brings them in, the deeper goal is always the same — to remember who they are and find the confidence that life (quietly) buried.
Barbara’s Signature™ Method isn’t a quick makeover. It’s a twelve session journey that reshapes how clients see themselves, the choices they make, and the way they show up in the world.
Clothes are the tool, yes, but reclaiming their sense of self is the real reward.
It begins with reflection — the same soul-searching questions she once asked herself.
Then comes the technical work: analyzing color, proportion, and silhouette to translate each client’s essence into what they wear.
Wardrobes are pared down and rebuilt intentionally, creating a capsule of pieces that honor both the life they have and the one they’re stepping into.
Hair, makeup, even choosing a signature scent are done with purpose — because style isn’t just visual; it’s sensory too.
The best part of the whole experience?
It culminates in a photoshoot that isn’t just a picture but rather proof of who they’ve become.

Becoming Your Own Beauty Standard
Carl Jung once said:
“The privilege of a lifetime is to become who you truly are.”
Helping clients achieve exactly that is at the heart of Barbara’s work, which is about cultivating a signature style that celebrates them — by bringing forward the colors, shapes, and details that feel unmistakably theirs.
When I ask what her clients look like on shoot day, emotion wells up in Barbara’s voice. “They look like the best version of themselves,” she says softly. “It’s super powerful.”
And it shows.
Clients are always sharing stories she never tires of hearing — promotions, compliments from strangers, new opportunities that seem to appear out of nowhere.
The external shift ignites an internal one and that confidence changes everything.
Maybe that’s why I love makeover movies so much.
Because in the end, the heroine doesn’t just change her clothes — she changes the way she sees herself.
Same with Barbara’s clients. They step out feeling differently — confident, renewed — and suddenly, the world takes notice.
Not because of the outfit itself, but because of what it represents: a woman who knows her worth.
